Badgers v Buckeyes. Big Ten Championship   no comments

Posted at 2:48 am in Uncategorized

The Wisconsin Badgers will again take on the Ohio State Buckeyes in the Big Ten Championship Game this Saturday at 7:00 pm CST pitting the East Division winner against the West Division Winner.  The game is at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.  The conference currently has a deal making Lucas Oil Stadium the site of the championship game through 2021.  The Badgers lead the conference with 6 appearances in the championship game and Ohio State is one behind at 5.  The Badgers won the first two Big Ten Championship games in 2011 and 2012 behind Russell Wilson and Montee Ball.  Since then the Badgers have dropped two games to Ohio State and one to Penn State.  The Buckeyes lead the conference with wins in 3 championship games.  In an earlier meeting this year Ohio State easily beat Wisconsin 38-7.  The Badgers are 10-2 and ranked 10th while the Buckeyes are 12-0 and the ranked #1 in the country.  It would appear that Ohio State has an excellent chance of being in the playoffs regardless of the outcome.  Other than a stumble against Illinois the Badgers have had a tremendous season.  Wisconsin looked very impressive in bringing the Axe back to Madison with a 38-17 win over the Gophers.  The Badgers have won 10 or more games in 4 of the 5 years that Paul Chryst has been head coach.

The 16th ranked Badgers take on the 18th ranked Hawkeyes this Saturday at Camp Randall at 3:00 pm.  The Badgers are 6-2 and have lost 2 in a row.  Iowa is also 6-2 and have won their last 2.  The game is televised on Fox.  The Badgers may very well have to win out to take the Big Ten West as the Gophers have a two game lead on them.  Minnesota takes on 5th ranked Penn State Saturday and the Badgers could use some help from the Nittany Lions.  The Badgers have an overall lead of 47-43-2 in their rivalry with the Hawkeyes.  Wisconsin has won the last three.

Badgers vs. Central Michigan   no comments

The Badgers face the Central Michigan Chippewas in their home opener at Camp Randall on Saturday at 2:30 pm.  Central Michigan is coached by Jim McElwain who is in his first year.  He previously was the head coach at Florida and before that Colorado State.  Before that he was the offensive coordinator at Alabama.  Last year the Chippewas were 1-11 overall.  They play in the Mid American Conference.  Probably not a real well know fact is that J.J. Watt began his collegiate career at Central Michigan as a tight end before he walked on at Wisconsin.  Central Michigan is coming in off a 38-21 win at home against Albany? The Badgers and JT hope to repeat their very strong performance against South Florida. Kickoff is at 2:30.

Little did you know, these two blend together quite phenomenally.  In fact, they go together so well, they make PB&J jealous. It’s nearly impossible to just have one of this delicious treat. Badgers vs. Iowa   no comments

The Badgers face the Iowa Hawkeye under the lights at Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City.  This is the first road test for the Badgers in the 2018 season.  The Badgers look for redemption after losing their first home game to a non conference foe in 41 games.  Iowa has begun the 2018 season 3-0 with wins over Northern Illinois, Iowa State and Northern Iowa.  The Hawkeyes lost to Wisconsin last year 38-14 in Madison in the annual battle for the Heartland Trophy.  The Heartland Trophy is a brass bull that is presented to the winner of the annual game. Although the rivalry is over 100 years old, the trophy is relatively new.  The trophy was first presented in 2004.  The Hawkeyes finished the 2017 season 8-5 overall which included a win over Boston College in the New Era Pinstripe Bowl.  The first meeting between these two Big Ten rivals was in 1894, they have met 91 times and Wisconsin leads the series 46-43-2.  One of my most memorable games in the series was in 1969 when Wisconsin beat Iowa in the 4th game of the season to end a 23 game winless streak.  The Badger faithful, myself included, reacted as if they had won the national championship.   Iowa is lead by Coach Kirk Ferentz who is in his 20th season as the Iowa head man.  He is the longest current tenured head coach in NCAA Division I FBS.  Iowa’s mascot is Herkey the Hawk.  The fight song is “On Iowa”.

Badgers vs. BYU   no comments

In the 3rd straight home game for the Badgers and in the home portion of this “home and away” showdown the Badgers host the BYU Cougars from Provo, Utah.  Game time at the Camp is 2:30 pm.  Last year Bucky spanked the Cougars 40-6 at LaVell Edwards Stadium.  Obviously the Cougars will be looking for revenge for that smack down.   The BYU head coach is Kalani Sitake and he is the first Tongan to be a collegiate football head coach.   During his playing career he was a 3 year starter at fullback with the Cougars.  His two year head coaching record with the Cougars is 13-13.  Last year they finished a disappointing 4-9 and in 2016 the Cougars were 8-4 including a win at Michigan State and a bowl game win.  BYU’s mascot is of course a cougar named Cosmo.  For those of you into fight songs here is a link to BYU’s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7f3AwUN1XE4.   My personal choice is “On Wisconsin”.  BYU is an independent and the BYU Cougar football program has a proud championship heritage that includes a national championship (1984), Heisman Trophy winner (Ty Detmer) and Super Bowl champions (Jim McMahon and Steve Young were Super Bowl winning QBs)
