Badgers vs. Iowa   no comments

The Badgers face the Iowa Hawkeye under the lights at Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City.  This is the first road test for the Badgers in the 2018 season.  The Badgers look for redemption after losing their first home game to a non conference foe in 41 games.  Iowa has begun the 2018 season 3-0 with wins over Northern Illinois, Iowa State and Northern Iowa.  The Hawkeyes lost to Wisconsin last year 38-14 in Madison in the annual battle for the Heartland Trophy.  The Heartland Trophy is a brass bull that is presented to the winner of the annual game. Although the rivalry is over 100 years old, the trophy is relatively new.  The trophy was first presented in 2004.  The Hawkeyes finished the 2017 season 8-5 overall which included a win over Boston College in the New Era Pinstripe Bowl.  The first meeting between these two Big Ten rivals was in 1894, they have met 91 times and Wisconsin leads the series 46-43-2.  One of my most memorable games in the series was in 1969 when Wisconsin beat Iowa in the 4th game of the season to end a 23 game winless streak.  The Badger faithful, myself included, reacted as if they had won the national championship.   Iowa is lead by Coach Kirk Ferentz who is in his 20th season as the Iowa head man.  He is the longest current tenured head coach in NCAA Division I FBS.  Iowa’s mascot is Herkey the Hawk.  The fight song is “On Iowa”.

In the 3rd straight home game for the Badgers and in the home portion of this “home and away” showdown the Badgers host the BYU Cougars from Provo, Utah.  Game time at the Camp is 2:30 pm.  Last year Bucky spanked the Cougars 40-6 at LaVell Edwards Stadium.  Obviously the Cougars will be looking for revenge for that smack down.   The BYU head coach is Kalani Sitake and he is the first Tongan to be a collegiate football head coach.   During his playing career he was a 3 year starter at fullback with the Cougars.  His two year head coaching record with the Cougars is 13-13.  Last year they finished a disappointing 4-9 and in 2016 the Cougars were 8-4 including a win at Michigan State and a bowl game win.  BYU’s mascot is of course a cougar named Cosmo.  For those of you into fight songs here is a link to BYU’s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7f3AwUN1XE4.   My personal choice is “On Wisconsin”.  BYU is an independent and the BYU Cougar football program has a proud championship heritage that includes a national championship (1984), Heisman Trophy winner (Ty Detmer) and Super Bowl champions (Jim McMahon and Steve Young were Super Bowl winning QBs)

For September Regent Liquor is featuring Einstok Icelandic White Ale.  From the Einstok website:  “In Iceland, our quest was simple: We wanted to make the best white ale we ever tasted. We got there with the complex flavors of the classic witbier, including orange peel and coriander – all brewed with pure Icelandic water and a touch of oats that deliver a cool smoothness that is uniquely flavorful and refreshingly drinkable”.  Key ingredients: Wheat malt, pilsner malt, oats, Bavarian noble hops, coriander, and orange peel.  ABV 5.2%.  Food pairings:  The crisp, citrus and spice notes are the perfect complement to seafood, poultry, vegetarian dishes, Asian food, and spicy food, including Mexican, tapas, Indian and Thai.

“Einstök Ölgerð® is located just 60 miles south of the Arctic circle in the fishing port of Akureyri, Iceland.  There, the water flows from rain and prehistoric glaciers down the Hlíðarfjall Mountain and through ancient lava fields, delivering the purest water on Earth, and the perfect foundation for brewing deliciously refreshing craft ales”.
