Badgers vs. Northwestern   no comments

Following their dominating win over Michigan the Badgers take on Northwestern at the Camp on Saturday at 11:00 am.  Wisconsin comes in at 3-0 and the Wildcats are 1-2 with a win over UNLV and losses to Stanford and Michigan State.  Bucky will be without both starting safeties (Eric Burrell and Reggie Pearson) for the first half as a result of targeting calls.  Jack Coan has been impressive and JT has been JT.    Against Northwestern the Badger are 59-36-5 overall.  The first game between the two was played in 1890.  Pat Fitzgerald, who is in his 14th season as the Wildcats head coach, was an All American middle linebacker at NU.  Last year Wisconsin lost to Northwester 31-17.  Did you know that Northwestern played in the first major college football game to be played in only one direction (vs. Illinois at Wrigley Field, 2010)?  Did you know that Northwestern played in the first Big Ten night game vs Purdue in 1935?  Did you know that even before the Wildcats became the official school nickname for NU, a caged live bear cub named Furpaw was the team’s mascot? In 1923,  however, the team had a bad season and decided the mascot was bad luck.  During the following season, the nickname Wildcats was officially adopted by the university after the team’s defense was described as a “wall of Purple wildcats”  Did you know that the Badgers will continue their winning ways by starting the season 4-0 with a win over the Wildcats?

In a very big game early in the season the Badgers take on the Michigan Wolverines this Saturday at 11:00 am at Camp Randall.  Wisconsin enters the game after a bye week following their solid win against Central Michigan.  The Badgers are ranked 13th in the AP poll.  They have outscored their first two opponents 110-0.   Michigan also comes in off a bye week with a 2-0 record.  Their wins came against Middle Tennessee and an overtime win against  Army.  The Wolverines are ranked 11th in the poll.   Michigan leads the series 51-15-1.  Harbaugh is in his 5th season at Michigan and has a record of 40-14 with a bowl record of 1-3.  Did you know that Harbaug’s older brother John is the head coach of the Baltimore Ravens?   Did you know that Harbaugh appeared as a cowboy in the western/science fiction show The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr?  Did you know that President Ford was a star center and linebacker at Michigan?  Did you know the Badgers are going to beat Michigan on the 21st?

The Badgers face the Central Michigan Chippewas in their home opener at Camp Randall on Saturday at 2:30 pm.  Central Michigan is coached by Jim McElwain who is in his first year.  He previously was the head coach at Florida and before that Colorado State.  Before that he was the offensive coordinator at Alabama.  Last year the Chippewas were 1-11 overall.  They play in the Mid American Conference.  Probably not a real well know fact is that J.J. Watt began his collegiate career at Central Michigan as a tight end before he walked on at Wisconsin.  Central Michigan is coming in off a 38-21 win at home against Albany? The Badgers and JT hope to repeat their very strong performance against South Florida. Kickoff is at 2:30.

Badgers vs. Minnesota   no comments

The Badgers face the Gophers for the Axe on Senior day this Saturday at the Camp, 2:30 pm.   Let’s send the seniors off proudly with a 15th straight win over the ground squirrels.  The Badgers enter the game with a 6-4 overall record while the Gophers are 5-6 overall.  Minnesota needs a win to be bowl eligible.  Minnesota’s head coach is P.J. Fleck who is in his 2nd season.  He is the former head coach of the Western Michigan Broncos and had his playing career at Northern Illinois (wide receiver).  The Badgers have won this border rivalry 14 years in a row and hope to retain Paul Bunyon’s Axe this Saturday in the battle for the Axe.  It is the most played rivalry in the NCAA Division 1 Football Bowl Subdivision with 127 meetings between the two teams.   Wisconsin leads the series60-59-8.  Founded in 1882, the Minnesota program is one of the oldest in college football.   Minnesota has been a member of the Big Ten Conference since its inception in 1896 as the Western Conference.  Their mascot is “Goldy Gopher”

Badgers v Purdue   no comments

Posted at 12:33 pm in Sports

The Badgers stay on the road with a game against Purdue, Saturday at Ross-Ade Stadium at 2:30 pm.   Hopefully Bucky can finish the season strong with wins against Purdue and the Gophers.  Purdue comes into the game with a 5 and 5 overall record and 4-3 in the conference.   Of course Purdue’s shocker this year was the 49-20 smack down of the Buckeyes.  The Boiler’s head coach of Purdue is Jeff Brohm, the 36th head coach in program history.  Brohm has been rumored to be in consideration for the opening at Louisville where Brohm played.  The Boilermaker Special is the official mascot.   It resembles a  Victorian-era railroad locomotive and is built on a truck chassis.  Purdue has also had a recent tradition of sending defensive ends to the NFL.  Since 1999, Purdue has had 9 defensive ends selected in the NFL Draft. With their success in the NFL, Purdue has earned the nickname, the “Den of Defensive Ends”

Purdue’s football program has long been known for its prolific passing quarterbacks, ranging from players who have set School, Big Ten & NCAA records, to being named All-Americans and finalist for national awards, to being elected into the College Football and Pro Football Hall of Fames. This great tradition has led to the school being nicknamed the “Cradle of Quarterbacks”. When Drew Brees led the New Orleans Saints to a victory in Super Bowl XLIV, Purdue became just the second college in history to produce 3 different Super winning quarterbacks.

The overall record in the Badger/Boilermaker series is 49-29-8 with Wisconsin having the upper hand.  The Badgers have also won 12 in a row.

Badgers v. Northwestern   no comments

Hoping to become bowl eligible for the 17th straight year the Badgers take on Northwestern Saturday at 11:00 am at Ryan Field.  They have the longest active bowl streak in the Big Ten at 16.  The task will not be easy but it never is against the Wildcats.  Northwestern comes into the game with an overall record of 4-3 but they are 4-1 in conference play.   Like the Badgers their only conference loss was at the hands of Michigan.   This came will play a huge role in determining the winner of the West Division.  Last year the Badgers beat Northwestern at Camp Randall 33-24.  The Badgers are ahead in the series 59-35-5.  The Wildcats are coached by Pat Fitzgerald who is in his 13th year as the head man and has a record of 91-68.  Fitzgerald starred at linebacker for the Wildcats in the mid-1990s, helping to lead the team to a 10–1 regular season record in 1995 and a berth in the 1996 Bowl.  Northwestern’s mascot is Willie the Wildcat and their fight song is Go U Northwestern.

Playing their 3rd game in a row under the lights the Badgers take on the Michigan Wolverines at Ann Arbor at 6:30 pm this Saturday.  They call it the Big House and capacity is a whopping 115,109.  Wisconsin comes in 4-1 and ranked 15th while the 12th ranked Wolverines are 5-1 with their sole loss coming against Notre Dame.  Last year the Badgers fell to Michigan at Michigan Stadium 14-7.  Michigan leads the series 50-15-1.  Current coach is former Michigan quarterback Jim Harbaugh and his record with the Wolverines is 28-11.  Before taking the Michigan job he was the head man at the San Francisco 49ers and before that Stanford.  Michigan’s fight song is The Victors.  Michigan has the most wins in college football history with a total of 944.

James Earl Jones, who provided the iconic voice for Darth Vader’s character, enrolled at Michigan as a pre-med student before switching gears and graduating from the School of Music, Theatre, and Dance in 1955. Jones isn’t the only Michigan student to make it big: President Gerald Ford (who played football for the Wolverines), Madonna (did not graduate), Google co-founder Larry Page, Lucy Liu, and Tom Brady all attended, among others.
